As a field that is constantly inventing and reinventing itself, artistic research is an ongoing negotiation of practice, techniques, methods and discovery. Join us for an affirmative, artist-centred and practice-focused conversation, where we aim to illuminate the process of artistic research and give voice to diverse and sometimes dissonant points of view, without a need for their resolution.

Aimée Portioli is a Berlin-based Dutch-Italian composer and sound designer who records and performs as Grand River, makes experimental electronic music, original sound art installations and 4D spatial sound. She has performed as Grand River at major international venues and festivals, including Barbican Hall, CTM Festival, L.E.V. Festival, MUTEK, Kraftwerk, Funkhaus, WOS Festival, Berghain and many more.

We invite you to come together as a community of artists to share, discuss and connect, knowing that this will inspire and nurture creative work.

End-of-Semester Feedback Forms - Important Updates for Semester B 23/24!

by Kris Beaghton -

Hey everyone,

It's that time of the semester again - we're collecting your valuable feedback to help us improve your learning experience at Catalyst!

This semester, we're making some changes to the feedback process for our CAP and EMP students:

  • CAP and EMP students will fill out the feedback form once for each workshop they attend, in-person during class. You'll submit responses to the same form multiple times throughout the semester, providing feedback for each individual workshop.
  • Your tutors will allocate 5-10 minutes during the designated feedback sessions for you to complete the forms.
  • Feedback forms will be split into mid-semester (focusing on broader aspects) and end-of-semester (concentrating on individual workshops and tutor-specific questions) components.

For all other students, the feedback process remains the same as before. You'll fill out one form at the end of the semester, providing your overall feedback on the programme.

You can access the feedback forms via the links through Moodle:

  1. Navigate to 'My Courses' or search in the Course Categories section.
  2. Scroll to the Feedback section.
  3. Click on "End-of-Semester Feedback (Semester B 23/24)".

Alternatively, you can access the links here:

Your participation is super important to help us enhance your educational journey at Catalyst. We really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts and experiences with us!

Thanks a bunch! 😊

MSVM Showcase

As If I Were Here

Saturday 11 May 14:00 - 20:00

Presented by students from the Music & Sound for Visual Media programme

Join us in celebrating the first-ever student exhibition presented by MSVM.

From "All the dumb things Kanye ever said" (a musical instrument) to meditations on the bounciness of hand made fish balls, MSVM students have drawn from the loudest and quietest voices in modern life.

Their first-year collaborations work across media and across the Human-AI divide: progressing from sound walks to sleep-walking dreamscapes.

Showcasing video games, music direction for film, as well as multimedia installations, their ability to envision and simulate another world is a common thread and gives the show its title: "As If I Were There".

MSVM (Music and Sound Design for Visual Media) is a brand-new interdisciplinary program at Catalyst. The exhibition will take place in Catalyst's newly-renovated facilities at Funkhaus.

End of year celebration - save the date!

Hey everyone,

Mark your calendars for Friday 7 June @ Catalyst - it’s our annual end of year event, but this time with a twist: we’ll be recognising your time over the last year with some curated presentations of your work + a few special awards (and party!).

More information will be coming soon on how to submit to have your work shown (we’re looking for everything from films to live music, album listening sessions and installations, to acting performances, DJs, special effects + more), plus more about the awards. Previously known as the ‘Film Awards’, this year they’re about all our disciplines here at Catalyst.

In the meantime - save the date!!! ☀️
